Lay a plank flat and the blade has to sever the fibres. Stand those same fibres on end and it slips into the gaps between them instead. The wood closes behind it, so the board does not scar and the edge survives the meal.
It is slower to build and more expensive. It also lasts decades.
End grain
Closes behind the bladeThe fibres stand upright, so the blade goes between them rather than through them. They lean aside, and the moment it lifts they spring back and meet. Nothing was severed, so there is nothing to stay open, which is why a board cut on daily for ten years still reads as one surface.
Edge grain
Keeps every cutThe same four woods, turned the wrong way. The fibres lie flat, so the blade has to cut the wall of every one it meets. Nothing closes afterwards: the kerf stays open, holds water where it sits, and the edge pays for the whole meal.

The pattern is cut from whatever came off the mill that week, so the mix of light and dark is never repeated. The photographs show the family, not your piece.

A workshop, not a factory.
Timber comes in as whole boules from Slovak mills, air-dries for a year in the yard, then is cut to order. Nothing leaves the bench until it has been checked flat with a straight edge.

Gluing the block takes an afternoon. Everything after that takes a week.
The maker's mark
A brass plate let into the border by hand and filed level with the surface, rather than a mark branded on top of it.
Chamfer and border
A mitred walnut frame closes the end grain, then every edge is chamfered and sanded through to 320 grit.
Oil, then wax
Three coats of food-safe mineral oil over four days, sealed with a beeswax and carnauba balm we blend ourselves.
It arrives as a gift, even to yourself.
Boards travel in a birch plywood box we cut, assemble and finish in the same workshop, packed in wood wool. The full care kit goes in free with every board — oil, balm and cloth, enough for the first year. About a third of our orders are gifts, so the box was never going to be an afterthought.
